CfR welcomes three new community energy co-operatives

Communities for Renewables (CfR) CIC has been appointed to provide management services to three additional community energy co-operatives.

Graig Fatha Wind Co-op in south Wales, Derril Water Solar Co-op in Devon and Kirk Hill Wind Farm Co-op in South Ayrshire will now receive professional support for their respective volunteer-led organisations. All three were previously managed by Ripple Energy, which entered administration in March 2025.

Following initial meetings, CfR team members were impressed by the dedication and resilience shown by volunteer Board members, who have continued to steer their co-operatives through a period of uncertainty following the loss of their former management provider.

The three co-operatives are currently at different stages of onboarding, with Graig Fatha the first to begin the transition process.

Graig Fatha Wind Co-op owns a majority share in a single wind turbine near Tonyrefail in south Wales, which has been generating renewable electricity since March 2022. The co-op has more than 900 members, each owning a share of the turbine and benefiting from reduced and stabilised electricity costs. Surplus income is also used to support local community initiatives.

Derril Water Solar Park is the largest cooperatively owned solar park in Great Britain, with more than 9,000 members. The project is in the final stages of construction and began delivering clean electricity to the grid at the end of 2025.

Kirk Hill Wind Farm, located in South Ayrshire, is the UK’s largest community-owned wind farm. Its eight turbines became fully operational in 2024 and are expected to generate significant volumes of clean electricity each year—enough to power tens of thousands of homes—while helping members reduce both their carbon footprint and energy bills.

Across all three projects, members own a stake in large scale renewable electricity generation, with the co-operatives governed by volunteer boards elected from the membership. CfR will provide professional support in the day to day management and administration of the businesses.
