3MW solar farm to power cheese factory in Somerset

Communities for Renewables (CfR) have partnered with a local farmer to codevelop a 3MW solar farm that will supply green energy directly to Barbers Cheese factory in Ditcheat, Somerset.

Located on agricultural land at Snagg Farm to the east of Ditcheat, the proposed solar farm will feature 7,200 solar panels. Once operational, it is expected to generate 3.5GW of energy, with 90% dedicated to Barber’s Cheese. This will result in a substantial reduction in carbon emissions—approximately 925 tonnes of CO2 per year—equivalent to the annual driving emissions of 200 individuals.

In addition to decarbonising Barbers Dairy, the project will establish a community fund expected to contribute approximately £10,000 annually—potentially more if electricity prices exceed projections. This fund will support local projects and good causes in the village and nearby areas.

Local residents will also have the opportunity to invest in the solar project through a community bond offer.

The project is being codeveloped in partnership with the local farmer. Planning consent was granted in December 2025 and construction should begin in 2025.
